Ron "Cat" Catlan, a 40-year-old quarterback, faces a professional crisis after a knee injury in a preseason game. He struggles with the thought of retiring, as a rookie is improving and he receives business offers that pale in comparison to his passion for football. Additionally, his marriage is suffering, and he finds comfort in an affair, but ultimately remains unable to resolve his inner conflict.
