During the Spanish Civil War, a husband-and-wife duo of troubadours, Paulino and Carmela, embark on a journey into rebel territory with their mute assistant Gustavete, only to be arrested and face a firing squad. However, they receive a reprieve from an Italian Fascist commander who is a lover of theatre. He offers them a deal: stage a burlesque of the Republic for his troops, and they will be granted their freedom. But Carmela, a fiercely patriotic woman, is torn between her loyalty to her husband and her duty to the Republic.
