Tom Collier, a carefree partygoer, meets photographer Christie Sage, which changes his life. He takes over a liberal magazine, The Bantam, which clashes with his family's values. As their relationship grows, Tom proposes, but Christie declines, knowing she wouldn't fit into his social circle. Tom then gets entangled in a disastrous marriage with gold-digger Cecelia Henry after Christie's rejection.
