Joe Cullen leaves his wife Julie and infant daughter Ellen Mary in the US to work in a mining camp in South America, but eventually stops sending money and writing to them. Julie files for divorce and moves to Howard, where she meets and falls in love with Frank Richards, a coworker. They get married and have a child, William. When Joe returns four years later, he initially wants to reconnect with Ellen Mary, but ultimately sues for full custody, leading to a racial issue between the white family and Frank, who is black.
