Widow Ruth, feeling abandoned by her family after her husband sends their son away for a drinking problem, tries to take her own life with drugs. However, she's thwarted by homeless Billy, who is mistaken for a mugger and arrested. Ruth has Billy released and decides to reward him by transforming her grand home into a private rehab facility, much to the dismay of her daughter and snobbish neighbors. They hire lawyer Todd Preston to stop her, but Todd's past with Ruth's daughter brings him into conflict with his new clients.
