Peter's father has passed away, leaving him to decide what to do with his vast country estate. With his father's arrangements taken care of, Vera and her son Paul, his long-time servant and her son, Peter is free to make his own decisions. He decides to host a New Year's Eve party at the estate, inviting his best friends from Cambridge, who were part of an acting troupe together. The group includes Andrew, a Hollywood TV writer, his American television star wife Carol, Roger and Mary, married jingle writers still grieving the loss of their twin baby, Sarah, a theater costume designer with her latest boyfriend Brian, and Maggie, a publishing company employee who pines for Peter.
