Idealistic teacher Sandra Beecher starts fresh at Kona-Pali High School in Hawaii, seeking a new start after a failed marriage. She discovers her unmotivated students lack drive due to societal expectations. Sandra challenges a handful of students to create their own science fair projects and they decide to build a solar-powered car for the Inter-island Race. CelTech sponsors the winner to participate in the Trans-Australian World Solar Challenge, where top minds compete. Despite the odds, Sandra convinces the school's shop teacher, Frank Machi, to join the project. Overcoming self-doubt, internal conflicts, and external skepticism, the team faces numerous challenges to finish their car and achieve their goal.
