Thomas Dunson, a determined cattle rancher, sets out to build a new life in Texas after the death of his love, Fen. He adopts an orphaned boy, Matthew Garth, and together they establish the Red River D ranch. Years later, Dunson faces financial struggles and decides to drive his massive herd to the railhead in Sedalia, Missouri, despite rumors of a closer railhead in Abilene, Kansas.
