War correspondent Matt Ellman regains consciousness on Riverworld, an Earth-like planet created by blue-skinned aliens, after a suicide bomber kills him in Singapore. He finds himself among resurrected humans from various past ages, including Sir Richard Burton, Francisco Pizarro, Mark Twain, Tomoe Gozen, and Ludwig Dürr. The Salvationists, led by Burton and Pizarro, seek to destroy the planet, while the Second Chancers, with Matt as their protagonist, aim to save it.
