Tom witnesses his best friend Casey's suicide and receives a bitter letter from Casey's sister Ellen, who had sent him a bullet to join his friend. After being expelled from university, Tom becomes fascinated with the Case family and befriends them under a false identity. He develops feelings for Ellen, but she remains unaware of his true identity.
