In a bustling Colorado boom town, a couple's fortunes take a dramatic turn, elevating them from financial hardship to a life of opulence and power, but at the expense of their relationship and moral compass.

The story follows Yates and Sarah Martin, a struggling couple living in a Colorado boom town grocery store. However, their fortunes change dramatically with sudden wealth, leading to increased prosperity and political influence. Yates purchases a grand mansion and builds an opera house in Denver, but his newfound status goes to his head and he leaves Sarah for the glamorous Lily. As he rises to become a Senator in Washington, he marries Lily, abandoning Sarah. But fate has other plans, and the introduction of the gold standard ultimately brings Yates' empire crashing down.
