Simone Forti: An Evening of Dance Constructions

Simone Forti's 1961 concert series, "Five Dance Constructions and Some Other Things", transformed the art form with its pioneering and groundbreaking program.

In the spring of 1961, Simone Forti presented a program of radical new dances at a New York loft studio. The performances, titled Five Dance Constructions and Some Other Things, featured non-stylistic actions by the performers, who moved through different locations in the loft. The event was organized by composer La Monte Young and featured a sculptural installation of elementary structures, including a hanging rope and wooden boxes. In 2004, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles invited Forti to re-create the dance constructions, which were documented on this DVD. The program includes six dance pieces, accompanied by La Monte Young's 2 Sounds, and features a question and answer session with Forti at the conclusion.
