Klaus Drittemann, a protest singer, flees East Berlin and his family to West Berlin, where an American record company wants to exploit his defection for ideological and financial gain. However, Klaus is uncomfortable with being used as a commodity and refuses to sign his contract. He travels to Cambridge to meet his father, a former East Berliner who disappeared 30 years ago, accompanied by a young French journalist, Emma, who knows his father's whereabouts.
