A college freshman struggles to cope with her mother's death, only to discover an urban legend about an online killer known as "Smiley" who appears to be stalking her and her friends after they type a specific phrase on the internet. As the legend takes a dark turn, Ashley must confront the possibility that the killer may not be just a myth, and that she may have inadvertently unleashed a terrifying force from the web.
