Kitty Manning, wife of a railroad telegrapher, finds life in their remote flag station lonely and dull. After the birth of their child, she joins a comic opera troupe in New York, leaving her husband Jim behind. Her success attracts the attention of Stephen Morton, the owner of Jim's railroad, who tries to win her over with wealth and jewels. When her car breaks down, Kitty spends the night at a small station, where she's inspired by the happiness of the operator and his wife. She offers to help with the station during a storm and, in a heroic act, warns an approaching train of a destroyed trestle by jumping on a railroad cycle.
