During the Korean War, two American POWs, Dr. Adrian Carmichael and Paul Quentin, form a strong bond in a North Korean camp. Adrian's stories about his family, including his wife Alice and two young children, help Paul feel a sense of belonging. However, a devastating letter from Alice reveals she has fallen in love with another man, leaving Adrian heartbroken. When the camp is attacked and many prisoners escape, Adrian dies in Paul's arms, but not before asking Paul to visit his family and ensure his children don't belong to anyone else. Paul, still traumatized, interprets this as a moral duty to kill the children rather than let another man have them. After recovering in a Veterans Hospital, Paul visits Adrian's family, fulfilling his promises to his deceased friend.
