In the 13th century, a disinherited Saxon youth named Walter of Gurnie flees England and joins the army of General Bayan, a fierce but kind-hearted leader. With his friend Tris, a skilled archer, they travel all the way to China, where they become entangled in the intrigues of Kublai Khan's court.
