In the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation, thousands of British prisoners are sent to German POW camps, including Captain Geoffrey Mitchell, who is hiding in plain sight as a deceased British officer. To maintain his cover, Mitchell begins a correspondence with the officer's estranged wife, Celia, while trying to find a way to escape and return to England, where his true identity and reception remain uncertain.
