The Europeans background

The Europeans

In autumn 1850, the lives of Boston's stern Mr. Wentworth are dramatically altered by the arrival of his orphaned niece and nephew, Eugenia and Felix, who have traveled from Europe to live with him.

In 1850, Boston, the stodgy Mr. Wentworth's household is disrupted by the arrival of his half-sister's children, Eugenia and Felix, from Europe. His daughter Gertrude is immediately smitten with her cousins, who she sees as worldly and sophisticated. She rejects the local minister, Mr. Brand, for the exciting company of Felix. Meanwhile, wealthy neighbor Mr. Acton is drawn to Eugenia, who is in the midst of a divorce from a European aristocrat. As the Americans become entangled with the penniless Europeans, questions arise: are they being used for their wealth, or is there genuine affection at play?
