The Green Promise background

The Green Promise

The Matthews family faces a daunting task when they inherit a farm, only to find themselves struggling to manage the property after their father's severe injury leaves him unable to oversee the farm's daily operations.

A widowed farmer, Old Man Matthews, moves his four children to a new farm in Millwood after their previous one was destroyed. He has a strong "my way or the highway" mentality and believes his experience is superior to all else. However, he claims to be fair and democratic, making family decisions by vote. He often manipulates his children, especially Abigail and Phineas, to get his way. His children, including Deborah, who thinks the farm is too expensive, and Susie, who wants to raise lambs, disagree with his decisions. The local agricultural agent, David Barkley, tries to advise Matthews, but he ignores him. David becomes an ally to Susie and Debbie, who have an unspoken attraction, and together they try to make the farm work despite Matthews' destructive actions.
