John Humperdink "Dink" Stover, a rebellious student at Lawrenceville Preparatory School in 1896, is at odds with his family and classmates due to his constant troublemaking. Despite his reputation as a coward, Dink proves himself in a series of fights, earning the respect of his peers. Over the summer, he meets Miss Dolly Travers, who rejects his juvenile antics, further fueling his disdain for women. However, a transformative experience with a teacher in the fall changes Dink's philosophy and behavior.
