In 1973, Spain is still reeling from the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Javier, the son of a former circus clown, is struggling to find his place in the world. Despite his dreams of becoming a clown like his father, Javier is burdened by tragedy and lacks the ability to be funny, instead playing the role of the Sad Clown. He finds work in a circus, where he befriends a cast of eccentric characters, but is constantly humiliated by the brutish Happy Clown Sergio. Javier's life takes a turn when he meets Natalia, a beautiful acrobat and abused wife of Sergio, and falls deeply in love with her. As Javier tries to rescue Natalia from her cruel husband, he must confront Sergio's jealousy and Natalia's conflicted feelings towards the two men.
