A former Chicago policeman, Jim Slade, is released from prison and moves to a small town to work as a night watchman at a college. When a coed is murdered, Slade begins his own investigation, despite being warned by his parole officer and friends to stay out of it. As he questions suspects, including the victim's father and a psychology professor, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit. Ultimately, Slade discovers that his parole officer and a friend are the true perpetrators of the crime and must confront them to bring justice to the case.
