The Nun's Story background

The Nun's Story

In the midst of World War II, a young nun faces a crisis of faith as she grapples with the horrors of war and her own personal struggles.

In 1930 Belgium, Gabrielle van der Mal, the stubborn daughter of a prominent surgeon, leaves her upper-class family to join a convent, hoping to work as a nun in the Congo. She faces strict rules, including silence and humiliation, before being assigned to the Congo. There, she works with Dr. Fortunati, a cynical but brilliant atheist, and proves to be a skilled nurse. Years later, she's forced to return to Belgium, where she learns her father was murdered by the Germans. This tragedy prompts her to leave the convent, unable to remain neutral in the face of her country's invasion.
