In the upscale California suburb, a housewife named Susan discovers a prowler outside her home and calls the police. Officer Webb responds to the call and returns to Susan's house, where they strike up a conversation and eventually start a romantic affair. When Susan's husband, John, becomes suspicious, she ends the relationship. Webb plots to eliminate John, staging a fake accident that leaves John dead. After being cleared of any wrongdoing, Webb quits the police force and manipulates John's brother to get close to Susan again. Webb convinces Susan that he's innocent and they resume their relationship, eventually getting married. On their wedding night, Susan reveals she's four months pregnant, leaving them to figure out how to explain the baby's sudden arrival.
