A British diplomat, Harrington Brande, moves to Spain with his son Nicholas, only to find the posting a disappointment, partly due to his wife's recent departure. Nicholas views the move as an adventure and befriends the new gardener, José, despite his father's disapproval. As tensions rise, Nicholas becomes increasingly close to José, leading to jealousy in Harrington, who eventually bans his son from speaking to the gardener. Just as things come to a head, another servant falsely accuses José of theft, forcing the family to reevaluate their situation.
