Inspector Marney of Scotland Yard travels to Calcutta to investigate the murder of Leonard Lee, a man with many enemies. John Wales, a suspect in the case, proposes a séance with medium Madame Rosalie La Grange to uncover the killer's identity. Wales believes the séance will either reveal the murderer or draw them out. The medium, who usually performs tricks for entertainment, claims to have genuine abilities when needed. As the evening unfolds, La Grange transitions from medium to detective, using her skills to uncover the truth with her own motives.
