A lone miner, Ralph Burton, escapes a cave-in to find a post-apocalyptic world where all of humanity seems to have been wiped out in a nuclear disaster. He travels to New York City, only to discover it's deserted. After forming a bond with Sarah Crandall, another survivor, their tranquility is disrupted by the arrival of Benson Thacker, who has navigated his small boat into the city's harbor. Tensions rise between the trio, fueled by racial differences between Thacker and Burton.
