Michel Houellebecq and Iggy Pop first met in 2009 after being fans of each other's work for years. Houellebecq has been a lifelong fan of The Stooges, and Pop went on to record two French albums as a result of their encounter.

The film is based on Michel Houellebecq's 1991 essay "To Stay Alive" and explores the struggles of artists, the importance of poets, and mental health issues.
