The small island of Wilby in the Canadian Maritimes is home to a diverse cast of characters, including islanders and non-islanders. Sandra Anderson, a single mom and former islander, has a reputation in town that hasn't changed since her teenage years. Her daughter Emily is trying to distance herself from her mother's past and focus on her new boyfriend. Meanwhile, Buddy French, the local police officer, is struggling with marital problems and Carol, his non-islander wife, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to her controlling behavior. The Mayor, Brent Fisher, is secretly planning for his future outside of politics, while Duck McDonald, the town handyman, deals with dyslexia. Dan Jarvis, a recently separated non-islander, is feeling isolated and suicidal after being rejected by the townspeople at "The Watch", a local hangout.
