Arthur Hawke, a coal truck driver from Kentucky, writes a novel under a pen name and sells it to a New York publishing house. He moves to New York City to work on rewrites and plans his next novel. Naive to the publishing world, he gets caught up in dealing with publishers, agents, and critics, and must decide whose advice to follow. As he navigates his new life, he falls for a wealthy socialite and also develops feelings for his story editor, Jeanne.
