Charlie, a straight-laced individual, becomes entangled in a reckless lifestyle of all-night revelry, abstract poetry, and jazz after befriending Steve, a free-spirited Beatnik. Despite discovering Steve's dark past and his own involvement in obtaining heroin for her idol, the Tenor Sax Man, Charlie offers to marry her. He narrowly escapes the police, only to be beaten by the drug gang, who mistake him for an informant. Heartbroken, Charlie returns to Steve, only to find her with the gang's leader, Leo, as she trades sexual favors for drugs.
