A group of struggling actors, led by Kihachi, face financial and weather-related challenges that threaten to shut down their performances. Kihachi's personal life is also complicated, as he secretly visits his ex-lover Otsune and their son Shinkichi, who believes his father is deceased. Meanwhile, the troupe's lead actress Otaka discovers Kihachi's secret and plots to ruin Shinkichi and humiliate Kihachi by bribing the ingénue Otoki to seduce the young man.
