In 1915 Vienna, a young woman named Elsa works in a hospital during World War I, using her skills to aid the war effort. However, her past experiences make it difficult for her to find acceptance, and she is approached by military intelligence to investigate an army major suspected of being a spy. As Elsa navigates her new assignment, she meets the major and a charming naval officer named Karl, and finds herself torn between her duty and her growing feelings for Karl.
