Medgar Evers, a former insurance salesman, became a leading figure in the fight for racial equality as a field secretary for the NAACP. He organized boycotts against discriminatory businesses and worked to desegregate the University of Mississippi. Despite believing that the Constitution guaranteed equal rights for all citizens, Evers' life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated by white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith on June 12, 1963.
