Ellis R. Dungan, an American-born filmmaker, made India his home from 1935-50 and became a celebrated director in the Tamil Film Industry. Born in 1909, he initially intended to stay in India for 6 months but ended up staying for 15 years, making 13 feature films. Despite not speaking the language, Dungan brought technical innovations and professionalism to the industry, and even served the Madras Government during World War II.
