Saul, the king of Israel, struggles to follow God's commands, and through the prophet Samuel, God orders him to destroy the Amalekites and kill all their animals. However, Saul refuses to kill the animals, thinking they will be offered as a sacrifice. As a result, God tells Saul that obedience is more important than sacrifice and warns him that he will lose his kingdom for disobeying God's command. Meanwhile, Samuel visits Jesse, a shepherd with eight sons, and tells him that God has chosen one of his sons to be the next king. God anoints David, the youngest son, as the king of Israel, surprising everyone, including Saul.
