New Communities, Inc. was founded in 1969 by Civil Rights leaders in southwest Georgia to help African American families achieve economic independence. For 15 years, the organization cooperatively farmed 6,000 acres of land, facing opposition from local racists and lack of government support. Despite losing the land to foreclosure in 1985, NCI was revitalized 25 years later after a successful class action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
