Black October background

Black October

The tumultuous 1970s in Canada culminated in the October Crisis, sparked by the Front de libération du Québec's (FLQ) kidnapping of government officials, threatening national chaos.

In October 1970, the Quebec separatist terrorist organization FLQ kidnapped British Trade Consul James Cross and Quebec Minister of Labor Pierre Laporte, prompting Canadian Prime Minister to invoke the War Measures Act, granting police sweeping powers and deploying the military to stop the FLQ and rescue the captives.
