Bunky Blum, a troubled boy, finds solace in his daily visits to a talking train, Train, at a children's park. As he struggles with bullies at school, he believes the train will save him, but his hopes are crushed when he realizes it's not magical. In a fit of rage, Bunky punches a girl in a wheelchair, leading to a violent brawl and his mother's hospitalization. With no family, hope, or security left, Bunky returns to the train, but instead of vengeance, it offers him peace.
