In the 1890s, Carrie boards a train to Chicago with big ambitions, only to face hardships and poverty. After getting fired from her shoe-stitching job due to an injury, she finds solace in the company of Charles Drouet, a salesman she met on the train. He invites her to dine at Fitzgerald's, where she catches the eye of the manager, George Hurstwood. As Carrie's relationship with Drouet deepens, she stays in his apartment, but when she leaves months later, she's accompanied by Hurstwood, who's in a hurry for unknown reasons.
