After the Civil War, Texas sold land to a group of northerners led by Judd Hastings, seeking financial relief. However, when Hastings demanded the land and the squatters refused to leave, the governor sent Mike McGann to resolve the issue. McGann successfully persuaded the ranchers to relocate with their cattle, which Hastings also coveted. Along the way, McGann fell in love with Hastings' daughter, Marian.
