In Yalta, ailing Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, cared for by his sister Maria, battles to finish his play "The Cherry Orchard". Despite Maria's aid, his creative process is complicated by his secret marriage to Olga Knipper, a Moscow Art Theatre actress. Maria's discovery of this union sparks a scheme to prevent Chekhov's return to Moscow, ultimately leading to a dramatic confrontation between the siblings.
