The world has been devastated by a virus, leaving children and teenagers to form a society with violent results. Sisters Evie and Fran travel from town to town, gathering food and finding shelter. They try to maintain normality by reading a favorite childhood story, "The Railway Children", to little sister Fran. One night, they find shelter in a derelict building, but are awoken by shouts and witness a girl being beaten. They help the girl, Alice, who leads them to a large building with singing coming from the basement.
