Conviction background

Conviction

Women are now the fastest-growing prison population globally, with a significant number incarcerated in Canada.

Three filmmakers entered a Canadian prison to ask women inmates what society would need to have been different for them to avoid imprisonment. The women, including prison staff, created art and stories through painting, drawing, singing, photography, and filmmaking to envision a better world. This film joins a global movement questioning punishment and prison, highlighting the imprisonment of vulnerable individuals struggling with trauma, mental health issues, and addiction.
