Gene Autry, a rancher, fences in the open range with barbed wire to stop cattle rustling, angering small-ranch owner Ginger Kirby. Range warfare erupts between the two groups, fueled by livery stable owner Sandy Reeves, who hopes to use the range for sheep. Gene and Ginger eventually team up and uncover Reeves' role in the trouble, leading to a gun battle with cowpunchers who believe the wire will put them out of work.
