The movie tells the story of Harold Russell, a soldier who lost his hands in a training accident, as he undergoes medical rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Initially despairing, Harold and his fellow amputees find new hope in the prostheses and training offered by the Army's medical corps. With the help of his new hooks, Harold learns to adapt and becomes competent in performing various tasks he previously thought were impossible.
