Florida Crackers background

Florida Crackers

The Cracker culture of Florida originated in the 16th century with the introduction of cattle and horses by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, giving rise to a unique pioneer society that flourished for centuries.

This documentary film tells the story of a little-known pioneer culture that dates back to 1521, when Juan Ponce de Leon introduced cattle and horses to North America. Centuries later, settlers of Celtic and British descent moved to Florida and rounded up the Spanish-descended cattle and horses. Today, some of these pioneering families still work cattle on Florida ranch lands, and this film captures their history, culture, and uncertain future as they strive to preserve their way of life in a modern world.
