A U.S. plane crashes in the Cambodian wilderness, and the pilot is taken hostage by the Khmer Rouge. The villagers' children are tasked with monitoring the prisoner, with the younger kids forming an unlikely bond. However, the older boy Pang harbors a different sentiment, having grown up without parents and now seeing the Khmer Rouge as a substitute family. He earns their favor by informing on fellow villagers, and his new responsibility of watching the pilot only exacerbates the pilot's plight.
