Great Performances background

Great Performances

The concert performance of Stephen Sondheim's musical reunites a group of showgirls from a fictional 1920s Broadway show, featuring the New York Philharmonic.

The 1985 concert performance of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical, presented by the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, reunites former showgirls from an annual Follies extravaganza staged between the wars. The plot centers around middle-aged Sally and Phyllis, who were once showgirls, now married to Buddy and Ben respectively. Sally is unhappy with her marriage and still in love with Ben, while Phyllis is divorcing Ben due to his inability to show genuine love. The show features wonderful songs, including "pastiche numbers" in the style of the period, and "book songs" that make for a brilliant score.
